Grid of Id Using a mapping technology called diffusion spectrum magnetic resonance imaging, Harvard University researcher Van Wedeen and colleagues show that the human brain may be wired more like a street map – a grid of pathways – rather than the presumed spaghetti-like tangle of neuronal connections. The work, part of the Human Connectome Project, shows sheets of parallel neural fibers running at 90 degrees to each other, much like woven fabric, each sheet arranged at right angles to others to form a three-dimensional grid.
