Of mice and metabolic maintenance            In a paper published online this week in the journal Cell Metabolism today, Michael Karin, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology in the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and colleagues describe how an evolutionarily conserved pair of proteins known as Sestrin2 and Sestrin3 help maintain metabolic homeostasis in human cells – and why they don’t or can’t do their job in obese mice (and by extension, obese people), leading to insulin resistance and diabetic progression.
