Happy Holidays from UC San Diego Health Sciences, home to 2008 Nobel Prize-winner Roger Tsien.

Pictured here holiday images from the Tsien lab at UC San Diego, created in the multiple colors he developed from the original green fluorescent protein (GFP), which glow intensely under ultraviolet light.

GFP has revolutionized the life sciences, and the scientists responsible for its development – Tsien, Martin Chalfie from Columbia University and Osamu Shimomura of Woods Hole – were awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Fluorescent light enables scientists to track, among other things, how cancer tumors from new blood vessels, how Alzheimer’s disease kills brain neurons and how HIV-infected cells produce new viruses.  They enable researchers to light up the inner workings of cells – and light up our holidays!
